Senator Selects Achiever
David Holly is a successful painter, world traveler, valued community volunteer, devoted employee and dedicated family member. As he has gained self-esteem over the past few years, he has become known for his sense of humor, outgoing nature, and willingness to try new things. For these reasons and more, New York State Senator George Maziarz selected David as the 2007 Senate Achiever for the 62nd District.
At the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Lockport location, David has become a regular volunteer for the local home delivered meals program through the day habilitation program and earns a paycheck by completing assembly work in the subcontracting/pre-vocational program.
During his 50 years, David has traveled extensively with his family, participated in bowling, performed with a chime group and dabbled in painting and cartooning. Four years ago, he expressed an interest in taking painting lessons. This simple request would unleash Davids hidden talents and creativity, leading to the development of an annual agency-wide consumer art show and on-site art workshops across Niagara County for community members and individuals with developmental disabilities. His mother, Gerry Holly, has served as co-chair of this event for the past 3 years.
To bring a high level of passion to a hobby and to find out you have a natural talent is a dream for many people; for David it has been an incredible journey. He has publicly displayed his artwork, sold a few originals and won several awards. A new stellar achievement is that David has been accepted to show at the 2007 Allentown Art Festival. With all of these accomplishments, it is no surprise that David serves as the informal Art Ambassador for the agency.
He resides in an agency community residence and is an active member of the household. In his spare time David enjoys supporting the Buffalo Sabres, going to the library and visiting with his brother Geoff and mother Gerry. He is the son of the late George Holly, a community activist and philanthropist.
Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara celebrated the theme "Spotlight on Success" at the Annual Awards Dinner & Gala on Friday, May 18, at the Niagara Falls Conference Center, 101 Old Falls Street, Niagara Falls, sponsored by KeyBank, NA.
"Individuals with developmental disabilities (also known as consumers) and employees were honored for their achievements over the past year, announced Connie S. Brown, executive director. Businesses, friends, family members and volunteers were also recognized for contributions to the agency and the foundation that enhance the lives of individuals with disabilities, added Brown.
The flag was presented by Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Cub Scout Troop #8555 and the national anthem was sung by the Day Services Chorus.
The spotlight was also on a duo from one of the agencys community residences, Karen DAmico and Tina Cochran, who performed their award winning Greased Lightening act from the 2007 Consumer Talent Show.
New York State Senator George Maziarz emceed the evening. A special drawing was held for an evening in Toronto that included hotel and theater tickets, courtesy of Brown & Company, Certified Public Accountants. Nick Zawacki, ARCEU NYSUT/AFT AFL-CIO Local 4265 vice president sang God Bless America to close out the program.
Consumer of the Year awards spotlighted individuals with developmental disabilities from each of the agency's program areas for the personal growth they have achieved over the past year.
Jason Buczkowski, Day Habilitation
When Jason began participating in the agency day habilitation program in Niagara Falls his goal was to increase his job skills to obtain employment in the community. Along the way he has discovered what it means to volunteer in the community, earn a paycheck for performing assembly work and be part of an environmental services team. Volunteering with the janitorial maintenance team at the Niagara Arts & Cultural Center gave Jason the opportunity to work on his social and concentration skills. He would easily become distracted and required one-on-one staffing. With the support of his staff, Jason can now complete tasks with little supervision and takes great pride in his accomplishments. Due to his endeavors, he obtained a paid position with the agency environmental services program and works two nights a week. He continues to volunteer and enjoys interacting with people. Jason lives in an agency community residence where he maintains an extensive DVD collection and is known for his loyalty to the Buffalo Bills. Even with his active schedule he is very close to his family and spends a lot of time with them.
Karen Hill, Day Services
Over the course of the last year Karen has marked many milestones in achieving her goals at the agencys day services program in Wheatfield. She has made great strides in verbal communication, mobility, patience and social skills. The team in the senior sensory program has noted how Karen has become friendlier. They enjoy watching her work on new projects and her growing sense of humor. She uses her walker to participate with the walking group and especially likes the agencys paved nature trail at Day Services. Karens favorite activity is to work with a tape recorder where she learns to recognize and respond to her own voice. She has learned how to independently notify staff that she needs to use the restroom and clears the lunch table without being prompted.
William Buddy Wall, Residential
Buddy is described as the perfect housemate who is always cheerful, willing to help, trustworthy and an all around gentleman. Living in an urban, community-based residence he has worked hard to achieve independent community access. After reviewing a community safety checklist, Buddy walks to a nearby church where he has become active as an usher and volunteer. Wanting to improve his writing and other education skills, he attends in-house school at one of the other agency residences and has learned to write his name. Recently Buddy was confronted was a serious health challenge, yet through all the necessary treatments he maintained a very positive outlook and never missed attending his day program. He has grown tremendously over the past year learning to do more things autonomously and eagerly volunteers for chores around the house.
Joseph Parmer, P.A.R.T.N.E.R.S./Supported Employment
Joseph brings a great amount of commitment and enthusiasm to his position with the supported employment program at the agency. During the past two years he has grown in each community-based job, attaining a maturity level and work ethic that prepared him for his current position at the Buffalo Military Entrance Processing Station (MEPS). Josephs first supported position was as a cart person at Wal*Mart. Starting in the winter, he handled this demanding job well. Joseph was then offered a position with more hours as a dishwasher at Niagara University. He had an excellent attendance record and brought a lot of energy to the job. However, Joseph wanted something to really grow with and be challenged by. When a position at the MEPS building became available through the federal contract with the agency, his job coach knew this was the opportunity Joseph had been waiting for. He has successfully changed his schedule to arrive very early in the morning to get to the worksite on the Niagara Air Reserve Station with the rest of the crew. Joseph is a kind and friendly person who is well liked by his coworkers and employees from the agency and base alike. He is willing to try all new tasks and brings a great sense of humor to all that he does. In his spare time he designs wearable art fashions.
William Roman, Supportive Services
Hard work, independence, curiosity, and determination typify the way William approaches his daily routine. Living alone in his family home presented challenges to him and he enlisted the help of the residential habilitation staff in the agencys supportive services program. William has found a new pride in the internal and external upkeep of his home. He has also created a plan for exercising at home and during planned outings, including nature walks. Outgoing, William greets everyone in the community, at his church, the fire hall where he goes to vote and at his agency pre-vocational program. In his leisure time, he enjoys recreational activities with the staff, participates in a community bowling/recreational league and values the relationship with his long-time girlfriend. Known for his sense of humor, William enjoys joking around with his friends in the agencys pre-vocational program and works hard to earn his paycheck. He also makes good use of his cleaning skills three times a week working for the agency environmental services cleaning crew.
Colleen Hildebrandt, Vocational Services
Bright, cheerful, courteous, friendly and goal oriented are the attributes that Colleen is known for at the agencys Lockport facility. Participating in the pre-vocational and day habilitation programs for the last few years, she has shown a new maturity regarding her self-esteem, work habits and desire to be of assistance to others. Along the way, Colleen worked hard to improve her money handling skills and enjoys working in the cafeteria. She has overcome her fear of operating the cash register and is now eager to wait on customers. Colleen has learned a lot about professional work habits, including being able to ask for help. She encourages her peers, helping to bring out their best attitudes and work.
Leroy Butts, Vocational Services
Never say never is a motto that typifies the daily drive and passion that Leroy brings to his pre-vocational program. He is being honored for giving his best every day in the face of tremendous physical challenges. A cheerful demeanor and willingness to try new projects typify Leroy. Boasting a large music collection at his agency community residence, his favorite entertainer is Elvis Presley. Leroy also takes great pride in his photo collection -- a history of friends, people and places. He has been with the agency for more than 15 years and is known for his great sense of humor.
Employees who have made substantial contributions to the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities (also known as consumers), programming and the image of the agency were also honored.
Jo Ann Mallo, MS, RD, CDN, Manager
Jo Ann, a registered dietitian, provides nutritional information
and counseling to consumers through her work in the Niagara Clinic. Working
together, the staff and consumers set goals, monitor food intake with a diary, and learn
about healthy choices, serving sizes, shopping, eating behaviors, food prep safety and
exercise. Her work touches the lives of many consumers and has enabled them to make
positive and significant changes in their health and lifestyles. Of particular note
are two consumers who met their goals of losing 50 pounds each; one consumer who has
reduced between meal snacks and lost 25 pounds and another consumer who lost over 20
pounds by eliminating regular soda pop from his diet. Consumers respond well to Jo
Ann because she is encouraging and supportive of all of their efforts. Clearly, she
is making a difference in the lives of people with developmental disabilities.
William Felvus, Direct Care
Willie, as fellow employees and agency consumers know him, is being honored for his volunteer spirit, dedication to the safety and well being of the consumers and his positive attitude. As a building maintenance specialist, he is on call 24/7 for any facility emergencies and has been a dedicated worker for more than six years. Yet, Willie finds the time to volunteer on the agency Peach Festival Parade committee, where he is a leader as the committee plans the theme for each year and creates the float and/or displays. In 2006, he created parts of a train that would integrate consumers who use wheelchairs. He has also assisted in securing donations to make the theme come to life and willingly used his personal time to ensure the train pieces would be completed for the parade. Willie never misses the opportunity to support and uplift the consumers, including attending the parade and annual talent show with his family.
Karen Smith, Direct Care
A program instructor at Day Services, Karen was nominated by a parent of a consumer who participates in the day habilitation program in Wheatfield. Beginning when she was this consumers teacher, a lasting friendship was created both with the consumer and with her mother who live together in North Tonawanda. When the mother suffered a major medical emergency, Karen took personal time off to stay at the house with the daughter until a temporary placement could be arranged. Considered by the mother to be a good friend they especially enjoy going to lunch.
Karen continues to visit at the house and helps out often, even taking them to the daughters dentist in downtown Buffalo. According to her supervisor, for nearly 20 years Karen has offered her friendship, creativity and love for holidays to every consumer in her class. She is known for her unique decorations for every holiday and for finding projects for the consumers to work on that are age-appropriate, interesting and challenging. Others note that Karen is an exceptional caregiver and advocate for the consumers and an all around team player.
The Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station received the Business of the Year Award for its nearly 20 years of support providing meaningful work for consumers who participate it the agencys environmental services program. Through a federal contract, there are currently 20 individuals with developmental disabilities who are responsible for the upkeep and cleaning of more than 40 buildings on the base including the new Buffalo Military Entrance Processing Station and two full-time supervisory employees. The base personnel provide a positive atmosphere and integrated environment for the environmental cleaning staff. They also include the employees in recreational (non-work related) activities. Leadership of the Niagara Falls Air Reserve Station over the years has presented several awards of achievement to the consumer workers for outstanding service and dedication.
The Rainbow of Opportunities Award was presented to Jerome Ulatowski, M.D. for exemplifying particular concern and devotion to people with disabilities. This award recognizes Dr. Ulatowskis personal involvement, advocacy and support of efforts to provide people with disabilities the chance to work, live and enjoy the greater Niagara community. One of two medical directors for the agency, a consultant position, Dr. Ulatowski regularly goes above and beyond his job description and has become a well-respected advocate for the rights of and health care protocols for individuals with developmental disabilities on both the local and state levels. Currently he is focusing on creating an opportunity for service providers and medical professionals to look together at the emerging needs of individuals with developmental disabilities who are in need of specialized geriatric care.
Dr. Ulatowski also maintains a private practice with Summit Pediatrics, serves as a physician for another area human service organization, is a clinical instructor for the next generation of physicians, and is active with the Kiwanis and Lower River Chamber of Commerce.
Some additional examples of the dedication and perseverance that Dr. Ulatowski brings to the agency are:
acting as a liaison with area health care providers and hospitals to ensure effective communication with agency program personnel and a continuum of care for consumers
serving on agency committees providing information on current medical trends and best practices
enhancing nursing training programs
The Family Recognition Award honors a family who has demonstrated leadership skills, contributed time and talent, and set the example of others to follow in serving the agency and individuals with disabilities. For many years, Tom and Patricia Minarcin have devoted their energies to the mission of this organization, serving as board and committee members and as leadership supporters of many agency and foundation activities. They are co-chairing the 2007 Niagara Open golf tournament, an event they have been involved with for quite some time.
Individually or together, Tom and Pat have volunteered for the Gift Wrap Booth, Celebrity Bartending, Niagara Open, Baskets OPlenty, Celebrity Bartending, the Consumer Talent Show, Essay Contest, membership phone-a-thons and the planned giving committee.
An active member of the Lewiston Kiwanis, Tom has sought ways to partner the service club with the agency. Tom was instrumental in establishing the Fairway to Success program that brought consumers together with community golfers to learn about the game. Many members of the Kiwanis participated.
Pat introduced the members of the Lewiston Service Guild, of which she is a member, to the agency and they have become dedicated volunteers and supporters. Pat is the immediate past chair of the Foundation Board of Directors and continues to serve as vice chair.
Pat and Tom are charter members of the Coterie Society, which recognizes those who have named the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation in their estate plans.
Pats daughter, Jennifer Stuart, is an agency consumer who participates in numerous agency activities with and without her family. Jennifers brother, Mike Stuart, volunteered to create a video in recognition of the agencys 50th anniversary which premiered at this occasion in 2005.
The Hunter Family Philanthropist of the Year Award, named after the family of one of the agencys founders, was presented to Wegmans, Military Road, Niagara Falls, in recognition of their corporate financial generosity, leadership and support of creating opportunities for enhancing the lives of people with disabilities and promoting independence. For many years, Wegmans has supported the mission of Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara by donating cash and in-kind gifts to assist with fund-raising events, employee recognition activities and families served by the supportive services program.
Additionally, Wegmans participates in the supported employment program providing community-based employment to individuals with developmental disabilities. Their compassion and commitment continues to impact lives and make a difference in the community. Steve Bertini, store manager, is a member of the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Board of Directors. In addition to his personal interest and leadership, he had served as a judge for several years at the agencys annual Consumer Talent Show.
Merry Hedges and Roger Watts, Volunteers of the Year, are being honored for their joint inspiration and volunteer service as co-founders of the agencys Siblings Group. Both Merry and Roger are pleased with the interest shown by family members in the first year of Siblings Group activities, which included presentations and discussions on a variety of topics such as guardianship, residential options and aging initiatives. Merry and I are very glad that so many family members have come out to the first year of programs, said Roger. There are a lot of other valuable topics to cover in future gatherings, and we look forward to meeting other siblings and family members.
Merry is the daughter
of Edith and the late Robert Hunter, former agency board members and founders of this
agency. Edith also served as an honorary co-chair of the 50th Anniversary Year.
Merrys sister, Patty Hunter, participates in the Day Services Senior programs
and lives in an agency residence, where Merry and her family visit frequently and
participate in on-going activities. Not surprisingly, volunteering is in
Merrys blood and the list of her involvement with the agency also includes the
Consumer Talent Show, Program Committee, Membership Campaign (as a volunteer
phone-a-thoner), Gift Wrap Booth, and service as co-chair of the Art Show
& Spaghetti Dinner.
Roger Watts is the son
of the late Pearl and Walter Watts, who were also founding agency board members.
His brother, Jim Watts, participates in the pre-vocational program at the
Niagara Falls location and also lives in an agency residence. Like Merry, Roger
re-connected with the agency during its 50th anniversary celebration and now volunteers
for the Essay Contest as well as co-leading the Siblings Group. I have always
been amazed that the hard work and dedication of a few families and staff so long ago
could have such long-lasting effects, commented Roger in 2005. As co-chairs of
the Siblings Group, Roger and Merry are continuing this outstanding volunteer leadership
tradition.
