MOUNT ST. MARY’S HOSPITAL AND HEALTH CENTER PROMOTES ARTISTIC ABILITIES WITH NEW COLLECTION FROM Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara

An artwork collection created by Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara artists was dedicated and blessed on June 3, 2010, at Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center in Lewiston. The works were created by people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities during fine arts classes offered at the three day program locations at Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara.  These pieces now adorn the walls of the connecting hallway that links the main hospital building with the Primary Care Office and Medical Arts Building.

“This collection of work by the artists at Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara reflects choice-making and exploration of art media,” offered Marcia Ross, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara fine arts coordinator  “The movement of ink through wet paper, brush strokes and creating shapes in the creation of mono-prints, all inspire the artists in the process of their art-making.”

The nearly 1,300 associates of Mount St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Center and leadership welcomed this first collection of artwork and the artists during the opening reception.

“We have hundreds of people in our facility everyday for a wide array of services,” said Judith A. Maness, Mt. St. Mary’s Hospital and Health Care Center president and chief executive officer.  “Giving them the opportunity to enjoy works of art from talented individuals is a bonus.  Plus, those of us who are here everyday get to enjoy them.”

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara is pleased to present this collection of work to the public and thank Mount St. Mary’s Hospital for their generosity in providing this space to celebrate our artists. We look forward to introducing the community to a variety of art over the coming months. Click here for area print media coverage of the event. To view video click here.

OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED OF NIAGARA SEEKS BOARD AND COMMITTEE MEMBERS

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, the largest not-for-profit agency in Niagara County providing programs and services to people with developmental disabilities and their families, is seeking nominations for individuals to serve on its board of directors and standing committees, announced James Kwasniak and Jeff Streb, chairpersons of the agency’s Nominating Committee.

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara has been providing individuals with developmental disabilities -- from newborn to seniors -- the skills necessary to achieve independence in their daily lives and enjoy community-based recreation (youth and adult), residential, employment and volunteer opportunities since 1955.  The agency also provides innovative health-related and support services including service coordination, education, job training (in-house and off-site), school-to-work transition, exceptional parenting, geriatric assessments, in-home services, horticulture therapy and respite across Niagara County.

Volunteer positions are available on the board of directors, which meets monthly and provides oversight, guidance and financial direction to the agency.   Board members will serve a three-year term beginning in June 2010.  Committee positions are also available and focus on personnel, finance, guardianship and the various programs offered to people with disabilities.

One in a Million? No.  One of Two in Niagara County? Yes

Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara celebrated the 90th birthday of Evelyn Lutter at a special surprise party in January.  Achieving this milestone is quite an achievement in the general public. Achieving this milestone as an individual with a developmental disability is rare. Evelyn is one of two individuals with developmental disabilities in Niagara County who is aged 90 to 99, and one of 16 in the seven counties of Western New York.  It is a testament to advances in health care in general, and specifically to understanding how aging effects people with disabilities, that Evelyn is able to celebrate this milestone.   Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara has specifically trained employees who provide geriatric assessments and plan appropriate social, physical and intellectual activities for our seniors

Evelyn is very talkative and active and greeted her numerous assembled guests. Her schedule includes attending day programming Monday-Friday at Day Services in Wheatfield where she especially enjoys the cooking club, going bowling on Friday afternoons, and participating in social activities with her housemates.  Evelyn lives at an Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara community residence in Wheatfield.

For over half a century, Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, a United Way agency, has provided innovative and results-oriented rehabilitation and supportive services to people with developmental disabilities of all ages and their families throughout Niagara County and surrounding communities.  We are dedicated to maximizing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities by providing them the resources to reach their greatest potential including training, employment, recreation, service coordination and residential opportunities.

OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED OF NIAGARA FOUNDATION Annual Meeting . . . Celebrating Ten Years of Leadership

More than 70 guests were on hand to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation at the organization’s recent Annual Meeting and Leadership Donor Recognition Ceremony.  Hovey & Massaro; Toski, Schaefer & Co., P.C. and Upstate Pharmacy, Ltd. sponsored the Foundation’s Annual Meeting.

Foundation Board president Michael Shaw presided over the occasion, during which Kathy Egan of Snyder Corporation was elected as the newest member of the Board of Directors. Officers for 2009-2010 are: president Michael Shaw, Buffalo Medical Group; vice president Peter Lovering, Niagara National Insurance; secretary Frances Iusi, City of Niagara Falls, and treasurer Victoria Polka, retired administrator Niagara Falls School District

Returning board members are: Kyle Andrews; Jacqueline Henwood, retired, Jenisco, Inc.; Anne Marie Hepfer, of DiMino’s Lewiston Market, Inc.; Betsy Higgins, LMSW, Niagara University/Niagara County Community College; Tova Kristal, McAuley Residence; Dawn MacDonald, First Niagara Bank; Jeffrey Mattiuzzo, Eastern Copy Products; Patricia Minarcin, retired teacher, Hamburg Central Schools and Gary Strenkoski, Strenkoski Brothers Construction Co., Inc.

Eight new members were inducted to the Coterie Society, individuals who have made a provision for the Foundation in their estate plans or as the residual beneficiary of a supplemental needs trust.  The Coterie Society now has 51 members.

Program participant Chris Rifenbark shared some of his Opportunities’ experiences at the breakfast meeting.  Earlier this year Chris was part of the first group of participants who attended a work preparation program at Niagara University.  According to Chris, “This program taught us all kinds of things like preparing for interviews and we even learned how to shake hands!”

More than 83 individuals, businesses and organizations were recognized for their leadership gifts of $500 or more during the past year.  Thanks to these and other leadership gifts and the generosity of individuals, families and community friends, the Foundation has raised more than $3.5 million in the past 10 years.

"We never would have achieved this milestone in the Foundation's history without the support of thousands of donors, volunteers and organizations over the last decade,” said Michael Shaw, Foundation Board president.   “To say we are so very grateful to them and to all of those who attended the event would be a gross understatement. In reality, there is no way we can adequately express our deep appreciation except to stay the course and pursue the Foundation's mission."

The foundation also unveiled a new logo designed compliments of the J. Fitzgerald Group of Lockport

The mission of the Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation is to provide a long-term source of financial support that ensures people with developmental disabilities have opportunities toward independence and integration within the community.
