CAMPERS WITH DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITIES CELEBRATE SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL WEEK OF CAMP HAPPINESS
BARKER, NY ----- Camp Happiness, a one-week day camp experience for people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities, concluded a successful inaugural run at Camp Kenan on Lake Ontario from June 16-20, 2008. A new collaborative effort of the Lockport Elks Lodge #41, the Lockport Family YMCA and Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, Camp Happiness served more than 40 eligible campers, aged 12-52 from across Niagara County.
A $10,000 grant from the Elks National Foundation provided the impetus for this unique project. Locally, the Lockport Elks Lodge #41 has been a longstanding supporter of Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara and the Lockport Family YMCA. Their interest in the welfare of people with developmental disabilities caused them to pursue this grant establishing this cooperative inter-agency effort for Niagara Countys first and only traditional day camp for people with developmental disabilities. The recreational activities available as part of this weeklong event offered people with developmental disabilities numerous health and social benefits, as well as a needed respite for their caregivers. For most attendees, this was their first experience at camp.
During the five days of camp, participants took part in activities such as hiking, basketball, volleyball, rock climbing wall, music, campfire time and arts and crafts. On Family Day June 20, all participants received award ribbons and certificates celebrating their accomplishments during the week. Many family members attended.
Camp activities were available and accessible to all participants, and campers were divided into age and/or ability-appropriate groups. Programming was conducted by specially trained YMCA staff and experienced Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara employees. Elks members and community volunteers assisted with camp operation and activities.
Lives changed this week, said John Zieziula, project coordinator for the Lockport Elks."
The Elks National Foundation funds Camp Happiness, in part, with in-kind services provided by the Lockport YMCA and Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara. Sponsorship and leadership donor opportunities are available to businesses, corporations, individuals and organizations interested in helping people with developmental disabilities realize their potential while experiencing five fun-filled days at Camp Happiness.
For more information about providing financial support or volunteering for this
exciting program, please contact John Zieziula, Treasurer, Lockport Elks, P.O. Box 395,
Lockport, NY 14095 or (716) 434-2798. Families of interested campers should

Unlimited of Niagara at (716) 434-4050. Information on participant criteria for the
2009 Camp Happiness will be available in October. Please visit www.camphappiness.org for more

Lockport Union Sun & Journal Article -
Camp Kenan experience a hit with special needs youth: A couple of campers grabbed their new friend by his hands, one each, and pulled him toward the cabin anxiously. Some impromptu rock climbing was about to start and they didn't want to miss it. About a dozen young campers streamed into the cabin near the Camp Kenan mess hall Thursday morning, gathering on cushions and gabbing excitedly as three boys suited up to tackle the rock-climbing wall.

OPPORTUNITIES UNLIMITED OF NIAGARA
Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara, the largest not-for-profit agency in Niagara County providing programs and services to people with developmental disabilities and their families, is seeking nominations for individuals to serve on its board of directors and standing committees, announced Amy Freiermuth and Dana Panattoni, chairpersons of the agencys Nominating Committee.
Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara has been providing individuals with developmental disabilities -- from newborn to seniors -- the skills necessary to achieve independence in their daily lives and enjoy community-based recreation (youth and adult), residential, employment and volunteer opportunities since 1955. The agency also provides progressive health-related and support services including service coordination, education, job training (in-house and off-site), school-to-work transition, exceptional parenting, geriatric assessments, in-home services, horticulture therapy and respite across Niagara County.
Volunteer positions are available on the board of directors, which meets monthly and provides oversight, guidance and financial direction to the agency. Board members will serve a three-year term beginning in June 2008. Committee positions are also available and focus on personnel, finance, guardianship and the various programs offered to people with disabilities.
