Leave a Legacy

Leave a Legacy ™ is a national program, founded in Columbus, Ohio by the Columbus Planned Giving Council in 1994. The program had been initiated in more than 120 communities in North America. The local Leave a Legacy ™ program is sponsored by the Western New York Planned Giving Consortium, which launched its first public awareness campaign in May 2001.

A gift in a will is a favorite way for people to leave a gift to their favorite charity. A charitable bequest may be designed when a new will is being executed or added to an existing will through a codicil.

Even people of average means have an estate, therefore including charitable organizations in your estate plan helps to answer the question "What can I do to make the world a better place than I found it?"

You have several options when you are considering a bequest:
A specific bequest is usually a specific dollar amount or a percentage of an estate. It any be in the form of cash, securities, real estate, or tangible personal property.
A residuary bequest names a charity as the residuary legatee to receive the residue of the estate after a specific bequest has been fulfilled.
A contingent bequest takes effort only if all primary beneficiaries named in the will have previously died.
A testamentary trust designates that part or all of the estate is to be left in some form of trust with a bank or individual trustee for the benefit of the charity.

Here are four easy steps to help define and create your legacy:

List the people and organizations to whom you want to leave a bequest
Contact your favorite charity regarding how your gift would help their work
Consult your professional advisor (attorney, accountant, financial advisor) for help
Write or change your will to reflect your value and to specify the gifts your wish to make

MEMORIES FOR LIFE MEMORIAL BRICK PROGRAM - The Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation has started a new project to honor loved ones and friends through a unique remembrance program that positively impacts the lives of individuals with developmental disabilities. As the new facility in Lockport is nearing completion, there is an opportunity to honor the memory of a loved one at the facility with the Memories for Life program. For a $100 donation a 4"x 8" brick will be placed at the agency's new training and clinical facility to visibly honor a loved one or friend. This is a great way to preserve the name of a loved one or friend well into the next millennium. If you would like to sponsor a bench with an engraved plaque in memory of your loved one this is available as well. All honorees will be recognized as the inaugural benefactors of the Memories For Life program. The plan is to create a lasting tribute walkway across the front of the building with memorial bricks. Each brick is a way to celebrate how someone has touched your life. To reserve a brick, contact the Foundation office at (716) 297-6400 or click here to download the donation form. Please send the donation form with payment  to Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation, 1555 Factory Outlet Blvd, LPO BOX 360., Niagara Falls, NY 14304-0360.

The Opportunities Unlimited of Niagara Foundation is pleased to welcome donations and event registrations through your Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards.
